Your lawn or front yard is often the first impression someone gets of your house, especially if your house is close to the road and easily seen by those driving by.  Here are a few quick and easy landscape ideas that can help renew your yard this summer.

1. ADD SOME COLOR: Color is an easy aspect to add to your garden or front yard with either colorful flowers, or even colorful foliage plants such as: Dogwood, Sedum, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Fender Cloud Plum, Rutgers Variegated Stella Pink, Euonymus Moon Shadow, Japanese Maple, Blue Star Juniper, Blue Spruce, Andromeda, and Cimicifuga Bugbane.

2. SEE THE BEAUTY AFTER DARK: Add in some lights to your design and help the beauty stay alive after dark. Some pathway lights are great, hanging lanterns on the porch or even accent lights to light up your favorite plant can go along way.

3. WELCOME THE WILDLIFE: Enjoy the beauties of nature by hanging a hummingbird feeder and fill with equal parts water and sugar dissolved. Or ad a small bird bath filled with just a few inches of water to welcome different types of birds to your yard. Even planting flowers that are heavy with pollen will attract bees and butterflies such as:

    1. Salvia
    2. Russian Sage
    3. Astor
    4. Penstemon
    5. Milkweed
    6. Butterfly Bush
    7. Butterfly Weed
    8. Cat Mint
    9. Rhododendron
    10. Azalea
    11. Echinacea
    12. Goldenrod
    13. White clover
    14. Jopie
    15. Redbud Tree
    16. New York Aster
    17. Bronze Fellow
    18. Geraniums
    19. Spirea
    20. Plethora
    21. Sweet Spire
    22. Bee Balm
    23. Mountain Mint

4. INTRODUCE AQUATICS: Adding some small water features such as a tranquil fountain or peaceful pond can really bring your garden to a new level.

5. STRUCTURE AND VARIETY ARE KEY: Bringing in different levels of plants to the garden will help, add some lower ground cover, some mid-height shrubs, and bushes and then some taller trees will give more structure and variety to your lawn.

6. STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES: A less noticeable, but favorable touch is adding in smell. Plant flowers that you can stop and smell along the pathway such as: Catmint, Roses, Russian Sage, Black Adder, Hyssop, Lavender, Basil Flower, Marigolds, Scented Geraniums, Peonies and St. Johns Wart.

7. HARDSCAPE: Don’t undermine the power of what rocks can do. Whether it’s adding a layer of river rock along the side of the pathway or inserting a few larger stones between plantings, stones can give more life and variety to any landscape project.

8. PERSONAL TOUCH: If you’ve done all this work to revamp your yard, why not enjoy it a little? Add in a few benches, picnic table or even a small gazebo and create a space that you, your family, and friends can spend time in and enjoy all your hard work.

9. PEACEFUL NOISE: Don’t forget about windchimes or garden spinners that can add movement to your garden.

Whether you decide to add in a few missing items or completely revamp your yard, most importantly cleaning out last years leaves and dead debris as well as weeding will be sure to make your front lawn a prettier site to see. If you are looking for help selecting and/or planting some new plants in your yard call or stop by Kalleco Nursery where our expert staff can assist you.  If you are interested in taking on a much larger project such as patios and pergolas give Masseo Landscape a call to discuss your options.
